Eliot Merk, Owner:

Eliot has been building in Hawaii for over 30 years. He was born in Palo Alto, California, graduated from Robert Louis Stevenson High School in Pebble Beach, California. In 1967, Eliot moved to Hawaii and for a few years, made his living building, repairing and maintaining boats in Honolulu. In 1970, he moved to the Big Island where for 2 years, he managed the Waimea Youth Center counseling at-risk youngsters. His first experience in the building industry

occurred in 1972 when he went to work for Realty Construction, a subsidiary of The Realty Investment Co., Ltd. He gained much knowledge and experience working on the Pacific Heights Town House project on Kukuau Street in Hilo. Eliot became a general contractor in 1978 when he founded Merks Works, the predecessor to J.E. Merk & Associates, Inc. Eliot and his wife Cheryl are both pilots who enjoy flying their Mooney aircraft all over the islands.
Emily Eissner, Office Manager:

Originally from Ohio, then sidetracked in Illinois for 5 years, Emily moved to Hawaii in 2004. Often referred to by Eliot as the "real" boss, Emily is responsible for the day to day operations of J.E. Merk including accounting, subcontractor and County of Hawaii correspondence and whatever else may need done on any given day. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and exploring the Big Island. She also enjoys taking pictures on her digital camera. Emily received a B.A. in Accounting from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in Ohio in 1999 and has been doing office / accounting work since.
